Robert Criss, 43, of Capitol Heights, is facing multiple charges after members of the Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) Gun Intelligence Unit and Fire Marshal Bomb Squad responded to a storage facility on Suitland Road on Wednesday, March 12, officials said.

An employee called 911 after discovering a suspicious device in a unit rented by Criss. Bomb technicians determined it was a homemade explosive device—a pipe bomb—which was safely rendered inoperable, according to authorities.

A further search of the unit uncovered ballistic-resistant body armor and multiple rounds of ammunition—which Criss was prohibited from possessing due to a prior criminal conviction, police said.

Criss was arrested the next day, on March 13, when he returned to the storage facility, where officers were waiting, authorities said.

He is currently being held without bond at the Department of Corrections as the investigation continues.

The case is being investigated by multiple agencies, including the PGPD Major Crimes Division Gun Intelligence Unit/ATF Task Force, PGPD Homeland Security/Arson Task Force, PGFD Bomb Squad, and the ATF Baltimore and Hyattsville Field Offices.
